Cylinder Heads
The crack in cylinder head 1-3 has been repaired, and installation will proceed this weekend.

The 986 engine is essentially a 996 engine, as you point out. In fact, most part numbers you see on the engine have the 996 prefix instead of 986.
I don't know for certain if it's 100% possible however. If I had a 3.4 or a 3.6 to look at, I would be able to be able to answer your question.
One concern would be how well the 3.2 heads would put up with the extra power of a 3.6.

Opening her up
So I was wondering, since you have really opened the engine up and I heard they are modular to some extent, is it possible to rebuild around a 3.6 block/crank/pistons? Would be a nice upgrade for the current 986 owners without having to buy a new/recon 3.6
